Moving house is listed among life’s most stressful events, right alongside divorce, marriage and job changes (and we chose to make a career out of it!) While it might seem like it’s just packing up boxes and new keys, there is so much more happening when it comes to selling your property.
We’ve moved thousands and thousands of people over the years. We’ve witnessed all of the emotions that goes with it too - the excitement, the tears, the overwhelm and of course even the panic that can accompany moving day. So, we thought we’d share what’s really going on based on our experience and how to make the whole experience feel more manageable and maybe even, dare we say it... a little joyful.
Number one: You're Not Just Moving House. You're Letting Go of Home.
That house held your memories and kept you safe and warm. Your baby may have taken their first steps, the kitchen is where you danced and hosted your friends, the same space in the hallway where you tossed your keys after a long day, leaving a home can feel like grief, even if you’re excited for what’s next. You might not notice it right away, but those feelings are there bubbling under the surface.
We always tell people that it is completely normal to feel emotional throughout the process. It’s a whole part of the process.
Your Brain Doesn't Love Uncertainty
Moving brings a lot of unknowns with it. Where will things go, will the sofa fit through the front door? What will the neighbours be like? Have you forgotten something? Even when everything seems to be going well, your brain is on high alert.
We naturally crave certainty and routine, these things help us feel safe and in control of any situation. When everything is up in the air, literally and emotionally it’s no wonder you start to feel frazzled.
That’s why we focus on clarity when you move with us. Clear communication is really important, timelines and backup plans are all essential. They help your brain breathe a bit easier.
Decision Fatigue Is Real
In the lead-up to moving, you’re making hundreds of tiny decisions and it can be exhausting, again - it's something that you might not notice straight away but it starts to take it's toll. Keep or donate? Bubble wrap or box? Which drawer did I pack the passports in? It’s ALOT! This is often more than twice the number of decisions we usually make in a day. It’s no wonder people end up in tears over missing kettle leads and last-minute changes.
We always recommend creating a simple plan, labelling everything clearly when packing and letting us do the heavy lifting.
You're Not Meant to Do It All Yourself
DIY moves have their place, eg. moving from rented into your first home - where there is no hard deadline to meet but if you’re well established and already stretched, trying to manage an entire house move with a deadline on your own, it is a fast track to burnout. The pressure to be organised, calm and in control while dismantling your entire life? It's a really big ask, let us help.
