The Best Way to Pack Each Room in Your House

Moving house can feel overwhelming, especially when you doing all the packing, but with the right approach, packing doesn’t have to be a nightmare. A well-organised packing strategy ensures your things stay safe and unpacking is a breeze when you get to the other end. Here’s our helpful pert guide to packing each room efficiently - so you can move with a little less stress!

Lyons Removals and Storage Packaging and Boxes

1. The Kitchen:

The kitchen is one of the trickiest rooms to pack due to fragile items and bulky appliances.

  • Plates & Glassware: Wrap each item individually in packing paper or bubble wrap if you don't have any paper. Stack plates vertically in boxes for added protection.

  • Small Appliances: Remove detachable parts and pack them separately. Use the original box if possible.

  • Perishables: Eat or donate food in the weeks leading up to your move. Avoid packing opened food containers ESPECIALLY if your kitchen is going into storage.

👉 Recommended Box Sizes of the kitchen: Medium to Large Boxes (Available in our Box Shop!)

2. Living Room:

  • Electronics: Pack TVs and monitors in their original boxes or use specialist TV boxes and blankets.

  • Books & Decor: Pack books in small boxes to prevent them from getting too heavy. Use bubble wrap for picture frames and ornaments.

  • Furniture: Disassemble if possible and wrap delicate surfaces with moving blankets. Make sure you put all of your sofa legs and removable parts in one easy to find box.

👉 Recommended Box Size: Small for books, Large for decor and soft furnishings.

3. Bedrooms

  • Clothes: Use wardrobe boxes to hang clothes directly from the rail.

  • Shoes & Accessories: Pack shoes in their original boxes or wrap them to prevent scuffs.

  • Bedding & Linens: Store in vacuum-sealed bags to save space.

👉 Recommended Box Size: Wardrobe Boxes, Medium for folded clothes, Large for linens.

4. Bathroom:

  • Toiletries: Make sure lids are on tightly to prevent leaks.

  • Medicines: Keep essentials in a separate bag for easy access (check out our essentials box post for help on this!).

  • Towels & Mats: Use them as cushioning for fragile items in other boxes.

👉 Recommended Box Size: Small to Medium for toiletries and essentials.

5. Garage & Storage:

  • Tools: Wrap sharp objects securely and use small boxes to keep weight manageable.

  • Seasonal Items: Label clearly to avoid unnecessary unpacking.

  • Hazardous Materials: Dispose of paint, propane and flammable substances safely.

👉 Recommended Box Size: Sturdy Small and Medium Boxes.

Final Packing Tips:

✅ Label every box with the room it belongs to and a quick description of contents. (write on the tape rather than the box with a permanent marker so your boxes can be re-used)

✅ Use strong packing tape to reinforce boxes.

✅ Pack an ‘Essentials Box’ with must-haves like chargers, snacks and toiletries for your first night.
